Webmaster Level: AllYou may have heard that here at Google we're obsessed with speed, in our products and on the web. As part of that effort, today we're including a new signal in our search ranking algorithms: site speed. Site speed reflects how quickly a website responds to web requests.
Speeding up websites is important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users. Faster sites create happy users and we've seen in our internal studies that when a site responds slowly, visitors spend less time there. But faster sites don't just improve user experience; recent data shows that improving site speed also reduces operating costs. Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that's why we've decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings. We use a variety of sources to determine the speed of a site relative to other sites.
If you are a site owner, webmaster or a web author, here are some free tools that you can use to evaluate the speed of your site:
- Page Speed, an open source Firefox/Firebug add-on that evaluates the performance of web pages and gives suggestions for improvement.
- YSlow, a free tool from Yahoo! that suggests ways to improve website speed.
- WebPagetest shows a waterfall view of your pages' load performance plus an optimization checklist.
- In Webmaster Tools, Labs > Site Performance shows the speed of your website as experienced by users around the world as in the chart below. We've also blogged about site performance.
- Many other tools on code.google.com/speed.
We encourage you to start looking at your site's speed (the tools above provide a great starting point) — not only to improve your ranking in search engines, but also to improve everyone's experience on the Internet.

My site, Awning Center is reporting a 9 second load time in site speed. In every tool I use online it's at 1.5 seconds average load time on first impression.
Why this huge discrepancy? It seems I'm being penalized for a problem on Google's end.
Hello, I was frustrated and confused about my website ranking. After reading this article I get some relief. My website http://diggwallpapers.com is 1 year old now but still it's ranking is very low. I only get average 2500 visitors daily (around 5-6000 pages/day). And my new blog is http://bollywoodunya.com is just starting. Please have a look and let me how can I improve the backend of my website and blog to get it top of the Google. Thanks, Please Reply me If someone really want to help me.
If this is a significant factor then the equivalent foodwise is that we should all eat at fast food restaurants as opposed to waiting for a quality burger!!
Speed is not always the best benchmark for quality.
Speed of is very usefull for you site but speed + no css no javascript + content+ low.

I think some things wrong with google page speed?
my page only scored 61
page size 159.2kb 0.667s to load.
tested another site
there score was 84
page size 1106.4kb and 29.495s to load
this can't be wright?
Como vamos fazer quando o site em questão é em WP como nosso site ludicca.com.br ? que por natureza já é lento no carregamento, isto ai pode favorecer a escrita em HTML5? em detrimento das páginas em PHP?
Wow, great article, I really appreciate your thought process and having it explained properly, thank you!
I think that the page speed is not so important the way you try to measure.
the most important is the moment that user can read something from the page.
For example, in few milliseconds the user can read the first part (using flush() of the page and the rest is still loading after. Also some non important images can still loading on the bottom of the page, but this is not affect the user experiences.
amazon use this technique and many other site. If you load an amazon page, you fast see the menou, then you fast see the product, and then the rest of the page load...
So please do not count on the full page load time, but on the first readable data to the user.
We've moved all our client sites to a SSD & 2011 Intel powered dedicated server in lieu of this article to take advantage.
We only wish the bonuses for proper optimization & great hosting were even more -- would be nice to see only the fastest & best programmed sites at the top of the rankings.

Are Page load time and page speed different? When I looked up my page load time on one website, it came as 6.27 seconds for www.CharlotteSummerCamps.org but the Google page speed said 2.5 seconds.
thanks for this
